The Isle Of Wight Autumn Walking Weekend - What Is Up For Grabs?
The Autumn Walking Weekend on the Isle of Wight is just a few weeks away. This unique weekend event is only one among numerous planned walking adventures that make up the Isle of Wight Walking Festival.
The Isle of Wight Walking Festival is a proud winner of The Beautiful South Awards for Excellence 2010 for Tourism Best Event (silver). It's not quite unexpected really that the Isle of Wight is the best spot for walking events and activities. Firstly, 50 % of the isle has already been listed as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) with over five-hundred miles of protected footpaths taking you to nature's charms all around. During 2011 for instance, roughly 300 walks have been and are still scheduled, a large number of which are tailored to a particular theme. Walking fun-filled activities include heritage trails, fossil searching, even a speed dating walk and the forthcoming Autumn Walking Weekend.
Preparing to celebrate its fourth birthday bash this year, the Isle of Wight Autumn Walking Weekend makes the most of the Island's diverse landscape, providing over sixty walks for all age groups and competencies. Last year's Autumn walk drew in approximately 18,000 players from inside and outside of the isle. A larger crowd is expected this year as the festival runs from October 21st to 24th. The 4-day event includes walks across shorelines, woodlands, ledge hiking trails and the island's legendary manor houses.
From wildlife and ghost walks to coastal and culture trails, there are walks for recreational walkers, die-hard ramblers, families as well as dogs - ranging from an epic 72-mile Beaches, Bars and Blisters walk happening over three days to trendy Ghost Walks, Halloween Adventures and a Tai Chi Walk. Also in the programme is the Dog Walk for the Hospice where pet dogs and their keepers go on a four-mile hike in Parkhurst Forest.
Nature-enthusiasts can check out red squirrels and other autumn creatures on the Brighstone Forest Safari, while families can also enjoy a Woodland Tales story-walk around Dixon Copse. So if you are among those that are single and available, the famed Speed Dating Walk promises to be a fun filled event. You can search out your perfect partner if you join up this walk and we're not discussing hype here. Thus far, the Speed Dating Walk has instigated three weddings!
A challenging 26.5 mile walk purely referred to as "Walk the Wight" culminates the festival and this is a support walk for the Earl Mountbatten Hospice. Quicker walks and a flat walk are also available. With the massive amount of pure beauty this getaway has to offer, there is no doubt that the Isle of Wight is the best place to hold walking events.
