Allot Your Faith Via Religious Yuletide Cards
The Christmas holidays often are divided into two separate areas of thought. The secular approach focusing on Santa Claus, Christmas trees, and gifts is popular in the U.S..
Although faith differs from one individual to another, it‘s religious faith that‘s the second common denominator. Many people celebrate the holidays for deeper, spiritual reasons and share those themes through the sending and receiving of religious Christmas cards.
Contents of Christian Christmas cards can include:
- A nativity scene depicting baby Jesus in a manger
- Mary and Joseph
- The Three Wise Men visiting the baby
The secularization of the Christmas holidays has long been a point of contention for active church and spiritual leaders. This makes them uneasy because major entities such as governments and businesses manipulate the Christmas season to promote business, and not to address the spiritual issues they believe in.
The Christmas holidays, at least in the U.S., were set aside to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Although the actual birthday of Jesus remains unknown, the Roman Catholic Church declared that date to be the 25th of December. Many historical experts believe church authorities chose this date because it corresponds with the winter solstice, already a popular Roman holiday that could be assimilated into Roman culture with little fanfare.
Protestant historians often fault the Roman Catholic Church for this, sometimes calling it the “paganization” of the birth event. It‘s clearly evident that arguments involving the church have been continuing constantly for hundreds and hundreds of years.
Other religions, too, have important holidays scheduled in and around December. One example is Hanukkah, an eight-day Jewish holiday that is celebrated on different days each December.
Most of these cards annually depict the major events surrounding the birth of Jesus Christ, and come under the title of religious Christmas cards. Most cards also include a Bible verse related to the birth of Jesus.
