Cracked Out Christmas – EP $4.95 … |
Put Yourself in the Holiday Humor By Using Christmas Greeting Gifts
Soon after the Thanksgiving Holiday people shift into high gear for the Christmas Holidays. Even as turkey leftovers remain in your fridge you’re likely to start getting Christmas greeting cards in your mailbox.
As a child, one night each December was earmarked to work on Christmas Cards. That night was special, and became like a tradition for my family. My mother would gather us all around the crackling fireplace and give us each a stack of cards, some crayons, and hot chocolate.
Most of the time I had no idea who the person the card addressed to actually was, but that didn’t stop me from putting those crayons to work and wishing them a very merry Christmas, telling them I hoped Santa Claus brought them everything on their list. While drinking my hot chocolate, I colored nearly every inch of each card with reindeer and Christmas trees, presents and Christmas lights, and, of course, with Santa Claus.
My concerns as a child included how distant the homes we were sending cards to might be, and whose house Santa would arrive at first. Regardless of need, my father regularly had a fire burning. I remember feeling waves of heat when he would stab the firewood in the fireplace to stir it up a bit.
As I saw it, when the family worked together to make Christmas cards was the true beginning of Christmas. At that time of year, I realized the good tidings of Christmas could be threatened if I didn‘t tow the line. I had better brush my teeth and get to bed on time. Santa Claus was checking my every move.
As I got older I participated less and less, content to drop into the living room and spend a few minutes chatting before heading back to my room to do homework or talk to friends.
But, now that I’m a father with young daughters I gather them around one night every December and hand them a stack of Christmas greeting cards and a box of crayons. I do it every year now, while I can, because I know one day they are going to pass and head to their room instead.
