Many church and spiritual leaders today fight against what they consider to be the secularization of the Christmas holiday season. Their arguments regularly focus on the fact that nonbelievers, governments, and businesses often usurp the true meaning of the holiday by, instead, promoting elements of commercialism.

In the United States, most people celebrate the birth of Jesus during the Christmas holidays. Although the actual birthday of Jesus remains unknown, the Roman Catholic Church declared that date to be the 25th of December. December 25 was chosen because it corresponded with the winter solstice and easily could be added with the Roman calendar, say many historical experts.

It‘s not uncommon for Protestants to decry the selection of December 25 as the date of Christ‘s birth, claiming it to be a form of “paganization”. Church debates in regards to secularization have been ongoing for hundreds of years, and might not go away soon.

But, Christianity is not the only religion with religious significance in and around December. People of the Jewish faith also celebrate Hanukkah for a span of eight days around this time of year, though that holiday typically occurs earlier in the month with specific dates varying from year to year.
